I’ve almost got WordPress setup how I want it. One of the things I’ve been working on is a way to require people to login to view personal posts. I’m sure most of my friends and family won’t appreciate this at first since they’ll have to login to another website, but I think it’s better than having a bunch of personal details out there for anyone to read any time.
The people at the WordPress forums have been extremely helpful. Most of my questions I found answered in previous posts, but stuff I couldn’t figure out was usually answered within a few hours. That’s better support than I’ve come to expect from paid products, and you don’t have to wait on hold to speak to someone in India!
I love how extendible WordPress is if you know what you’re doing. You can go in and rearrange the themes to your heart’s content and install a ton of different plugins. That said, I wish there were some things that were installed with the original setup: spell checking and a way to figure out what version of WordPress you’re running are two fairly basic features that come to mind. I wish there was a more robust permissions system as well, but I’ve managed to scrape something together to get it to work how I want. B2evolution is another blog system that has ‘protected’ posts, something that I think WordPress should incorporate.
I’m sure I’ll be doing more work on the site, but so far I’m really glad I moved from blogger.
